Calling All Writers and Artists!

Originals, ECU's student literary magazine, is accepting submissions for its 2022 issue. Any enrolled ECU student, including graduate and concurrent students, may submit poetry, short stories, novel chapters or excerpts, creative nonfiction, personal essays, film and television scripts, plays, visual art, and academic essays that are written for a general audience for consideration. We are unable to publish every submission. However, our mission is to publish the best work by the most students, which allows us to include work by a large number of students each year.

Submission Guidelines

Poetry: students may submit up to seven individual poems. Each poem should be under 75 lines in length. Preference is given to poems that contain specific and unique imagery, create forms that are consistent with the content, and are not dominated by rhythm and rhyme. Please single space poems and double space between stanzas.

Prose: students may submit up to five individual works. Each work should be under 7,500 words in length. Please double space all prose submissions. Large sections of a novel may be broken into chapters and submitted as individual works. Academic essays should entertain and inform the reader. Prose is a term we use for any writing that is not poetry and includes the categories listed in the first paragraph.

Visual art: any genre is acceptable and must be submitted in jpg, png, or pdf formats, and must be a minimum of 300 DPI. Five individual works may be submitted. Two works will be featured in color on the front and back covers. Other selected works will appear in black and white inside the magazine. (Each artist may convert the work to black and white before submitting it or do so after the selection process is completed.)

To support the work of ECU students, please purchase a copy of Originals 2021 for five dollars in Faust 147 or by emailing Dr. Mark Walling at mwalling@ecok.edu. This will also allow you to see the type of works that have been published in the past.

Deadline: All submissions should be emailed to mwalling@ecok.edu by midnight on Monday, October 25, 2021.

Originals has been published annually since the 1950’s and is the most prestigious student publication in the state of Oklahoma. The magazine has served as a launching pad for numerous writers and artists who have enjoyed regional and national success after graduating from ECU. Our mission is to support the literary and artistic endeavors of the ECU student body by publishing the best work by the most students in a colorful, glossy, perfect-bound magazine that will allow the creative efforts of ECU students to be shared and enjoyed for years to come.
